Solenoid Valve Basics Part 4.1

Solenoid Coils

A solenoid coil is used to produce the electro-magnetic force required to operate a solenoid valve. It consists of a winding of isolated copper wire encased in a heat resistant, insulating thermoplastic polymer.

The coil is fitted around the armature tube of the solenoid valve. When electrical power is applied to the coil the current passes through the copper wire creating a magnetic field around the armature tube. This magnetic field attracts the armature inside the tube towards the fixed core which opens or closes the valve.

M&M International solenoid coils are available in the full range of standard voltages from 12v DC to 230v DC and 12v AC to 230v AC. Custom voltages are also available on request.

Solenoid Valve Basics Part 4: Solenoid Coils

The photograph above shows a 7700 coil and a 2700 coil. Both are for use with 230v – 240v power supply. The 7700 is part of the 7000 coil series which are suitable for use with ‘D’ series solenoid valves which have an armature tube with a diameter of 14.5mm. The 2700 coil is part of the 2000 series which are for use on ‘B’ series valves which have armature tubes with a diameter of 10mm. The coils are interchangeable so, for example, a solenoid valve operating from 230v AC power supply could be converted to operate from 24v DC by replacing the 7700 coil with a 7250 coil.

Solenoid coils are specified with a power consumption rating (see table below). AC coils have an inrush and holding power rating measured in volt-amperes (VA). Inrush is the power used when the coil is initially energised and holding is the power used while the coil continues to be energised. DC coils do not have inrush power and holding power is measured in watts (W).

Solenoid coils are given an insulation level rating (‘class’ in the table below). This is the allowable temperature that the coil can be operated at for normal expected service life. The allowable temperature is the temperature rise of the coil due to power consumption plus the ambient temperature of the system.
